Brady Russell, Eastern PA Director of Clean Water Action, & Tracy Carluccio, Deputy Director, Delaware Riverkeeper will discuss the threats to water quantity and quality imposed by drilling for natural gas in shale buried a mile underground. The process uses massive amounts water and more than 100 chemicals, some of them toxic. No existing sewage plant can adequately treat this water after drilling. Also because of what is known as “Halliburton Loophole” added to the 2005 Energy Policy Act the loophole pushed by former Vice president Dick Cheney exempted hydrofractuing from regulations and oversight that would otherwise be required under the Safe Drinking Water Act this means Companies are not required to divulge the chemicals that are used during the hydrofracturing process. It was recently deluged that these companies have been pumping thousands of gallons of diesel into the ground in the hydrofracturing process. Brady and Tracy will discuss the effects of hydraulic fracturing and its effects on groundwater and potentially your drinking (Send to a Friend)
